Academic Tutor and Writing Coach Steven Killion, PhD, has been helping high school and college students learn how to succeed since 1985. As a college professor he has taught students of all abilities, from struggling basic writers and English-as-a-Second-Language students to advanced literature scholars. Having studied Latin, Germanic, Romance and Celtic languages and literatures, he understands how to use language to create great writing. As a long-time writing teacher, his superpowers are organizing, revising, editing and proofreading—all practical skills any student can learn to do well. Having written tests and other academic assessments, he understands from the inside how best to anticipate and to prepare for them. His experience as college professor and as executive director of an after-school, non-profit learning lab providing academic support for high school students includes

  • Developing and teaching college writing and literature courses;

  • Tutoring in one university writing center and helping establish another;

  • Directly tutoring, individually and in groups, high school students of all abilities in all academic subjects;

  • Providing direct, intensive academic support for college students;

  • Developing a variety of programs, strategies, courses and workshops designed to help students from all walks of life achieve academic success.

With special expertise in writing, literature, languages and the humanities, Steven understands that the best learning results from patient coaching and clear instruction rather than judgmental criticism. As an academic coach, Steven's goal is to develop independent learners. He helps students understand how to approach projects and assignments so that their success with one challenge leads to further success with new tasks. His students develop confidence, gain independence and build toolsets they can use in school, on the job and in life.

Steven's academic-support strategies involve helping students take control of their workload, planning how to best meet the challenges facing them. Through patient coaching and instruction aimed at successfully completing actual tasks facing students, Steven helps them understand what teachers are asking for in their assignments and how students can deliver, thus building the skills required for long-term academic achievement and independence. Demonstrating how to sort through reading assignments, supplementary materials and class notes, Steven can show students how to predict what will be on their tests and how to practice for that exam so that they will be well prepared, confident and ready to succeed when it counts most.

Steven works with high-school students in public venues like coffee shops and libraries, or he can meet students in their homes with a parent or guardian present.

College is hard, a lot harder than high school, and sometimes students who have done extremely well in high school are surprised to discover that they are not doing as well when they move on to college.  Writing is a key component of developing and demonstrating mastery of college course content; sometimes it is THE way for college students to present the results of their original research, advancing the state of knowledge in their fields of study.  Students who graduate with a solid record of academic achievement are students who have developed their skill set and who have learned to write well. Fortunately, Steven is an excellent, experienced college tutor who understands the challenges facing college students and who knows how to help them develop the additional writing and study skills they need to stand out from their peers.

Working with Steven is like have a professor on your side.  Having designed and delivered college writing and literature courses for students of all abilities; having worked with hundreds of developing academic writers, and having assigned, commented on and evaluated thousands of essays, Steven understands how to approach assignments and develop essays from both the student's and the instructor's perspective—he knows how to help you produce what your professor is hoping to see.  He has also developed exams and essay tests, and he can help you use your course materials and class notes to understand what is likely to appear on your exam and how to best prepare for it, making your study skills more efficient.  Writing well academically and performing well on exams doesn't have to be a mystery—there is a science and an art to it that you can master.
